Overseas: The Algarve's best-kept secret

Author: Independent, The (London)

British buyers on the Algarve isn't a new story - this stretch of the Portuguese coast has long been a favourite with Brits. Over the years, most activity has centred on the area between Faro and more recently Lagos, central and western Algarve, as buyers head further west in search of affordability. But land at Faro airport these days and you're very likely to see a new breed of buyer, heading out east.

Headlands International's Chris Johnstone-Smith says: "This area really has lain undiscovered. It's much less developed than central or western Algarve where, traditionally, British buyers have links, but these areas are now stretching people financially and prices in the east are significantly lower brick-for-brick."

Johnstone-Smith believes that the eastern stretch offers more than value for money: "The infrastructure here is starting to emerge. Playing golf here is a lot cheaper than in the west and the area also has the most beautiful golden sandy beaches that always attract people with children."

The area may be growing in attraction but, so far, Johnstone- Smith says that small clusters of new houses are more common than mass residential development. But cash is obviously flowing into the area and the new motorway means the Spanish border is now around 40 minutes away - perfect for day trips to Seville.
